01
What Open Graph tags control
Open Graph metadata tells compatible platforms which title, description, image and URL to use when a page is shared. Without it, the platform may select an unintended image or truncate text in a way that weakens the preview.
Consistent sharing metadata gives marketing teams more control over how a page appears outside the website.
02
The essential tags to implement
A reliable setup includes og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url and og:type. The selected image should be large enough for social previews and should communicate the topic even when displayed without surrounding page context.
Twitter/X card metadata can be added alongside Open Graph for better control on that platform.
03
Keep metadata aligned with the real page
The social title can be more concise than the on-page H1, but it should not misrepresent the content. Use a canonical URL and make sure each indexable page has relevant metadata rather than repeating site-wide defaults.
Dynamic sites should generate tags from the same content source that powers the page.
04
Test every important template
Use platform debugging or preview tools after implementation, especially when images or URLs change. Social networks may cache an older preview and require a refresh before the new metadata appears.
Include Open Graph validation in launch and migration QA for important landing pages.
